Symbolism and Meaning in Medieval and Early Modern Buildings

16th October, 2018
Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, West Sussex

Concentrating on the polite architecture of English great churches and castles and their heavy investment in carved and painted details the course will closely examine the meaning in this imagery and explore its historical context to build up narratives of politics, belief and custom that can transform our understanding of what great buildings represented to their contemporary audiences. This is one of two linked day schools, led by Jonathan Foyle, which can be booked separately: 20 September (buildings from 1200-1450AD) and 16 October (buildings from 1450-1600AD).
